Chibok girls release and Nigeria’s President’s misogynistic comment

So…an awesome thing that happened this week, was the release of 21 of the female students from Chibok, Borno State who were part of the 276 girls kidnapped two years ago by Boko Haram insurgents. Yes there are still just under 200 still being held by those monsters. Yes it’s unsettling that 5 boko haram commanders were exchanged for the girls but I cant even imagine what the parents of these girls have been  through in the last two years. Its certainly refreshing to see progress in a situation that seemed hopeless and now we have far more optimism about the release of the remaining girls. And just when Buhari seem to have done something right he goes and messes it up with a truly shocking comment.

Im sure youve all heard that at a joint press conference with Angela Merkel, just yesterday. Nigeria’s President and Commander in Chief General Muhammadu Buhari said

“I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room,”

This has sparked outrage worldwide, naturally. Are we that surprised though? Obviously actually saying the words at an international forum is different from having that mindset and keeping it fairly private. However the sexism i’ve seen in day to day life in Nigeria leaves me completely unsurprised. His response to his wife saying that he she will not campaign on his behalf when his term runs out if he doesn’t sort his Cabinet out is that she belongs in the kitchen,

About the US ELECTIONS. We are less than a month away now and I just want it over and done with. I’m tired of the back and forth smear campaigns now. To me there is only one candidate running -HRC. I don’t think she’s the most incredible presidential prospect but she deserves to win compared to her opponent. It’s irritating that her husbands meandering are constantly used to undermine her even though he’s not the candidate and that shows how women get flack for things men wouldn’t. I’m more than happy for her to be challenged on the email scandal or failing to deliver in certain areas whilst in public service, but the personal stuff is uncalled for especially when he opponent is a well known misogynist.

On a much lighter, totally unrelated, note Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for literature and while he writes such wonderfully poetic lyrics and its nice to have a winner of the award that people actually have heard of, I like many writers, raised a bit of an eyebrow. Writers cannot really win Grammys, can they, so….

Would love to hear your thoughts on any of these issues. Hope your weekend is going well! <3
